30 Years. 30 Lessons.

We recently celebrated Proactive Worldwide’s 30-year anniversary, and it made me pause in a way I haven’t in years. Milestones like this force you to look not just at what you built, but how you built it. I remembered the folding table that served as my first desk, the early years powered more by belief than certainty, and the countless moments when perseverance mattered more than polish.
I also thought about the sacrifices that shaped us — like the time when I stayed awake for 108 straight hours to serve a client. I’ll do the math for you. That’s 4.5 days, fueled by a ridiculous amount of caffeine and pure determination. By hour 90, I’m pretty sure I saw unicorns galloping across my keyboard. It was absurd, unsustainable, and something I’ll never forget. But looking back, it reminds me how fiercely we were committed to earning trust and proving ourselves.
And then I remembered the crises we survived…the people who shaped our culture…the truths that revealed themselves through experience… and the victories that reminded me why this work matters. What follows are the 30 lessons that have stayed with me the most, earned across three decades in the highs, the lows, and everything in between.
30 Lessons from 30 Years
30. Perseverance is the greatest startup currency, especially when belief outweighs resources.
29. Cashflow is oxygen; don’t wait until you’re gasping to respect it.
28. Never assume a big client is secure; even the strongest relationships collapse without continual value.
27. Talent rarely arrives fully formed; a leader’s job is to coach, develop, and strengthen people over time.
26. Resilience is earned long before you need it, which is why surviving 9/11, the 2008-2009 financial crisis, the 2012 recession, and Covid changed us forever.
25. The fastest way to lose trust is to sacrifice quality for speed; the fastest way to grow is to deliver both.
24. Don’t scale what’s broken. Fix the engine before you hit the accelerator.
23. Leadership requires immense emotional energy, most of it spent in quiet moments no one sees.
22. Discipline is what carries you through downturns when effort alone won’t.
21. Delegation isn’t letting go. It’s multiplying your impact through trust in capable people.
20. Empathy and accountability are not opposites; the best cultures master both.
19. Not every revenue opportunity should be chased. Strategy involves choosing what not to pursue.
18. Growth stops when learning stops, usually long before the numbers reveal it.
17. The best marketing is still a delighted client saying, “Call Proactive. Trust me.”
16. Feedback is a gift, especially when it feels like a punch to the gut.
15. Purpose and values are more powerful than any strategy slide. Without it, execution becomes hollow.
14. Intentional culture always outperforms accidental culture.
13. Surround yourself with people who challenge your thinking, not those who simply echo it.
12. The biggest threat to a 30-year company is believing you can win the next 30 with the same playbook.
11. Trust is earned slowly and lost quickly, which is why it demands attention every day.
10. Preparation is the hidden foundation of every great client experience. The work before the work is the work!!
9. When things go wrong, clients want honesty, ownership, and a real plan — never excuses.
8. Quality is not an event. It is a decision repeated relentlessly over time.
7. Empowering people who can do things better than you is the true catalyst of growth.
6. Saying “no” at the right time is far more strategic than saying “yes” every time.
5. People matter more than processes because people carry a mission through uncertainty.
4. Sacrifice is unavoidable, but choosing the wrong sacrifices will cost you more than you gain.
3. Integrity, excellence, and follow-through remain the greatest competitive advantages.
2. Relationships outlast projects, and trust outlasts everything.
1. After 30 years, I’ve learned this above all: a company endures when it honors God, respects its people, protects its culture, delivers value with integrity, and shows up with purpose every single day.
As I reflect on these 30 years, I feel nothing but gratitude. Proactive Worldwide exists today because of the extraordinary people who poured their energy, skill, belief, time, and heart into this company. To our current and former employees who helped build and rebuild us through every chapter… to our clients who trusted us with their challenges… to our partners who strengthened our work… to the friends who encouraged us… and to the family who supported this journey behind the scenes… thank you.
And I want to offer a special and deeply personal thank you to Gary Maag, who co-founded Proactive with me and stood as a steadfast, trusted business partner from day one through his retirement at the end of 2022. His commitment, wisdom, and partnership helped shape Proactive’s foundation in ways that will always be woven into our story.
This milestone belongs to all of you. Here’s to the next lessons, the next horizon, and continuing to uphold our purpose every day.
