The role of a Competitive Intelligence (CI) professional has never been more crucial. As industry dynamics continuously evolve, so too must the skills and competencies of those who navigate the changing landscape of market and competitive intelligence. But what truly sets apart top-performing CI professionals from the rest? It boils down to mastering a set of core competencies that are essential for success in this field.
I’ll be part of a panel discussion at the Council of Competitive Intelligence Fellows 5th Virtual Annual Summit on September 18, along with Tom Tao, Lindy Smart, and Jeffrey Sisk where we will explore the essential CI training, education, and skills one must develop to stay relevant and add the most value. Over the past three decades, Proactive Worldwide has helped many Fortune 500 companies build or enhance their CI Functions. We developed this Intelligence Capability Competency Framework, and I thought I would share it with you and give you a sneak peek at some of the content we’ll address during this panel discussion.
1. Industry and Strategy Capabilities
At the heart of every CI professional’s toolkit lies a deep understanding of the industry and strategic frameworks. This involves keeping a finger on the pulse of market trends and forecasting and interpreting competitors’ strategic moves. Expertise in strategic specialization allows CI professionals to provide actionable insights that drive business growth and differentiation.
2. Consulting-Related Competencies
In a consulting role, CI professionals must excel in client or stakeholder management, experience, and value delivery. It’s not just about gathering information; it’s about presenting intelligence it in a way that influences decision-making and adds tangible value. Cross-functional team leadership is equally critical, ensuring that CI insights are integrated across various organizational departments and functions.
3. Core/Foundation Skills, Knowledge, and Behaviors
The foundation of any successful CI professional rests on their ability to conduct thorough secondary and primary research. This includes the effective use of external resources and the ability to elicit in-depth findings. However, research is just the beginning. Business writing, analysis, and the synthesis of information are key to developing clear, concise, and impactful deliverables. Often you cannot find out what you want to know…you have to figure it out through analysis!
Moreover, communication is pivotal. CI professionals must present their findings concisely and effectively, demonstrating business impact that resonates with stakeholders. Professionalism, business maturity, and technical aptitude also play significant roles in building credibility and trust within the organization.
4. Performance Management and Continuous Development
No CI professional should be content with just meeting expectations. The best in the field continually strive for improvement, whether in their research techniques, writing, analytical capabilities, or presentation skills. Performance Management combined with the Intelligence Capability Competency Framework provides a clear path for development, helping CI professionals identify areas for growth and setting the stage for career progression.
To assess the performance of those on your CI Team, you may want to consider this Performance Management tool we developed to evaluate the proficiency level of team members across various competency requirements, Are the skill of team members for any particular competency below where they should be, at level, or are folks ready for the next level…have they mastered the competency?
5. Intelligence Leadership and External Recognition
Finally, CI professionals must aim for leadership within their domain to stand out. This includes gaining external recognition through thought leadership, published insights, speaking engagements, or participation in industry forums. Networking and talent development are also key, as building a strong network within the CI community can lead to new opportunities and insights.
Being an elite competitive intelligence professional demands a well-rounded skill set, blending deep industry knowledge with strategic insight, communication prowess, and continuous development. By focusing and mastering on these core competencies, CI professionals can ensure they meet and exceed their roles’ expectations, driving impactful decisions and guiding their organizations to success.
