There it is, growing by the day—a daunting, uninvited guest sitting in the corner of your mind (and maybe also in your laundry room). You know you should tackle it, but instead, you keep tiptoeing around it, hoping it will magically disappear. But it doesn’t. It just sits there, a constant reminder of everything piling up, waiting, silently amplifying that sinking feeling of being overwhelmed.
Let’s start by taking an honest look at what it means to feel overwhelmed. Overwhelm is that crushing sensation that everything’s spiraling out of control—the tightness in your chest, the racing thoughts, and the creeping exhaustion that come when life’s demands feel like they’re too much to handle. I’m feeling it today as I write this article!
Being overwhelmed can feel like you’re constantly running on a treadmill with the speed set way too high, your to-do list growing faster than you can keep up, and life pulling you in a hundred directions all at once.
It’s not just a to-do list that’s long; it’s feeling so buried that you’re not even sure where to begin. And, just like a laundry pile that seems to grow on its own, overwhelm can be a relentless, persistent visitor, always there, reminding you of everything you haven’t yet done.
This feeling isn’t just about having a lot to do; it’s the weight of it all pressing down, making each new task feel like one too many. And when overwhelmed hits, we feel its pain in every way: the lack of focus, the guilt of not getting it all done, and, sometimes, the pure dread of even trying.
It’s okay to feel overwhelmed. Life isn’t meant to be a perfect checklist, and we’re not machines built to handle endless demands without feeling the pressure. But we can embrace a bit of chaos, laugh at the sheer ridiculousness of it, and just start.
So, how do we face it? Overcoming overwhelm isn’t about finding a mystical “balance.” It’s about learning to tackle life’s mountains one piece at a time.
Here’s how to get started:
- Set a Timer and Focus on One Task: Instead of being paralyzed by the whole list, pick one thing and give it just 15 minutes of attention. Maybe it’s starting that overdue project, beginning a workout, or just clearing the clutter on your desk or kitchen counter. Even a short, focused effort can often get you unstuck and build momentum.
- Break It Down and Prioritize: Overwhelm grows when tasks feel like an unmanageable mess. Separate your list into smaller pieces and prioritize what needs immediate attention. Think of it like sorting laundry: lights, darks, towels. Tackling one category at a time can make the whole pile seem a lot less intimidating.
- Celebrate Small Wins: Give yourself credit for the small steps you take. Did you get through a handful of emails? Folded and put away a load of laundry…especially the whites? Great! Every little accomplishment chips away at the pile and reminds you that progress is being made.
When the weight of life feels overwhelming, remember: you don’t have to do it all at once. Breath. Being overwhelmed doesn’t mean you’re behind—it means you’re human. And just like that last load of laundry, you’ll get through it, one piece at a time.
